Franklin's Gull @ Dairy Mart Sod Farm 4/15/2007
John Morgan, Dan Baumann and I found a Franklin's Gull at the
Dairy Mart Sod Farm
(GPS) just as we were wrapping up birding for the day.
A true team effort. I spotted a single gull in the northern part of the sod farm
and drove towards it. John Morgan shouted "It's got a black head!". Dan Baumann
didn't take his eyes off the bird until we managed to drive closer to it. It
wasn't very cooperative, flying more than it was on the ground. Then we all
stared at it for several minutes in spotting scopes, photographing and referring
to our field guides trying to determine if we were right...A FRANKLIN'S GULL!!!!
Then we started to call everyone we could with the news.
The bird appeared to be in breeding plumage with a slight peach color visible on
it's breast.
