Brown Booby @Tijuana River Mouth 10/2/2006
Dan Baumann and I went out to the Tijuana River Mouth at 3:30PM
today in search of the recently reported Brown Booby. After 2 hours of
continuous searching I spotted a Brown Booby at 5:32 PM perfectly
lined up with the Coronado Islands. It was easy to get Dan on the bird
using the islands as a reference and we observed the bird fly north to
about the IB Pier and then start to fly south again, repeatedly diving
for fish. We estimate the bird was about 1 mile off shore. We finally
lost the bird at 6PM while it was flying south in the direction of the
Coronado Islands.
Here's the photo's I got putting the lens up to the eyepiece of my
spotting scope. I apologize for the poor quality, but I think they are
good enough to determine it's a Booby. We got a few good looks at the
underwing and believe it was an adult Brown Booby.
